From Rookie to Chief

Some stories begin long before the badge, the rank, or the years of service.

“I can still remember being 9 years old and waiting for the fire alarm to sound, running down Depot Street to try to catch up to trucks that were whizzing by on the way to a call. Even then I knew that this was the path for me and since then I have dedicated my life to the love of the Fire Service.”

Over the course of his 36 years in the fire service, Danny has served in every rank. As he shared,

“Like many others I started on the bottom of the ladder, and I have been on every rung, from rookie to Chief.”

Danny proudly serves with the Red Oak Volunteer Fire Department in Greenville, North Carolina.

We had the pleasure of meeting Danny and his wife, Amy, at the North Carolina Fire Chiefs Conference. It took him a couple of passes, but Amy eventually convinced him to stop and share some of his years in the fire service with us.

As Danny shared his story, it became clear that this wasn’t just another pendant. We wanted to create a piece that truly reflected his career and the service that meant so much to him.

He later shared these words with us:

“There’s a respect for your fellow Fire Fighter and a mutual respect for nature that must always be present and a particular awareness that goes hand in hand with this path. There’s truly no greater fulfillment than having been able to serve my community all these years. There are great times and, on the reverse, just as equally bad times. My love, passion and dedication for this job has only grown as I proudly enter my 36th year in the Fire Service.”

After approving the design and putting the final touches on his pendant, we were excited to send it out. This is one of those moments we wish we could have experienced in person. When Danny received his pendant, he shared these kind words with us:

“After meeting the Five Alarm ladies at a Fire Chiefs Conference in Concord and talking with them at some length of some of my experiences, I feel like they were able to appreciate the journey that it takes to be a Fire Fighter. They succeeded! They perfectly captured the essence of all my years of service so beautifully in this pendant and I will proudly wear it for my next 35! Ladies, thank you so much for such a memorable, sturdy and absolutely stunning piece of my personal history!”

And he does!

We were so excited when Danny stopped by our booth at SAFRE the following year. Seeing him proudly wearing his pendant in person meant so much to us.

We also had the pleasure of meeting several firefighters from Danny’s department, as well as his son, who we had heard so much about. While we were together, Danny also chose a Maltese Cross for his son—a piece he can wear proudly alongside his father.

We are humbled to know that each member of the Coward family was able to find a piece that honors their service and reflects their individual journey.

We’re grateful to Danny and his family for allowing us to share a small part of their story. It has been a privilege to meet them, and we hope to see them again the next time we’re down their way.
