Two Symbols, One Tradition.

Throughout the history of the fire service, certain symbols have come to represent courage, dedication, and tradition. Among the most recognized are the Maltese Cross and Saint Florian, each carrying centuries of history and meaning.
During the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Memorial Weekend, we had the pleasure of meeting a Jesse M. who shared a piece of jewelry he owned that was no longer wearable. He hoped to have the design recreated in sterling silver while preserving the details and character of the original piece.
What made this design especially unique was its double-sided construction, featuring Saint Florian on one side and a more classic interpretation of the Maltese Cross on the other. The cross has a timeless, traditional design with a refined twist, giving the piece a distinctive character while honoring its historic roots. We loved the opportunity to bring the original design to life once again.
The Maltese Cross: Courage and Honor
The Maltese Cross traces its origins to the Knights of St. John, whose eight-pointed cross became a symbol of courage and service. Over time, it became closely associated with the fire service, representing bravery, sacrifice, and the commitment to protecting others.
Today, it remains one of the most recognizable emblems in firefighting, reflecting both the traditions of the profession and the legacy passed from one generation to the next.
Saint Florian: Protection and Faith
Saint Florian, a Roman military officer and Christian martyr, has been honored for centuries as the patron saint of firefighters. Often depicted pouring water over a burning building, his image has long represented protection against fire. For generations, firefighters and their families have looked to Saint Florian as a symbol of faith, strength, and protection.
Bringing Two Traditions Together
This custom piece brought these two meaningful symbols together in sterling silver. The double-sided construction allowed each to stand on its own while highlighting the traditions they represent. The classic Maltese Cross design, enhanced with a subtle twist, gives the charm a timeless appearance while preserving the character of the original piece.
At Five Alarm Charm, it’s always a pleasure to create pieces that celebrate the history and heritage of the fire service. We’re grateful our paths crossed during Memorial Weekend and honored that Jesse entrusted us with recreating a piece that holds so much meaning to him and honors his service.
